Students listen attentively at a LALSA-organized panel on the 1L summer job search. We had great turnout to hear from panelists who worked at New York and Palo Alto law firms; the UNHCR in Geneva, Switzerland; the DOJ and US Attorney's Offices; the Education Law Center; and in-house at Stroz Friedburg.
Academics & Professionalism
Academic and Professional Success
Penn LALSA places a strong emphasis on academic support for its members, especially its 1L members. Our upperclassmen mentors offer academic support to the first year students on a personal level, offering class advice and exam preparation help.
LALSA maintains an outline bank covering doctrinal courses from all years, but with a particular emphasis on 1L courses and professors. The outline bank is available to all LALSA members, and upperclassmen often contribute.
LALSA, often with other affinity groups, organizes panels for 1Ls on:
For our LLMs, LALSA offers mock interviews and individual strategy sessions to discuss American business culture and US law firms from 2Ls and 3Ls with relevant experience, as well as informal mentoring through our Familias mentoring program.
Career Exploration
Throughout the year, LALSA partners with law firms and other student organizations to host panels featuring a variety of Latino legal practitioners across various fields. Previous LALSA events have brought to campus major figures in international arbitration, employee benefits law, and public interest work, among others.
In 2017, LALSA will host a Latino Career Exploration Day, where multiple panels featuring prominent Latinos in different legal fields offer students a glimpse into a wide variety of practices all in one afternoon.
LALSA also sponsors students to participate in moot court competitions across the country, most notably the Hispanic National Bar Association's Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition. In 2013, LALSA's HNBA Moot Court Team won second place in the competition, and Bre Piper, a second-year team member, won Second Place for Best Oralist.
Law Review/Academic Journal Writing Competition
This year, LALSA and BLSA (the Black Law Students Association) plan to launch a partnership to best support our members who want to pursue spots on Penn Law's nationally renowned academic journals. In addition to our traditional panel and review session at the end of the semester, LALSA will offer multiple targeted practice sessions for members who want to hone their Bluebooking skills early in the semester. LALSA members on Law Review and other journal boards will meet in small groups with 1Ls to discuss the significance of journals, develop individual writing competition strategy plans, and drill edits.
